What are the commonly used soft magnetic alloys?

2024-12-26

It is a commonly used Soft Magnetic alloy. Permalloy core has a face-centered cubic structure, and its excellent plasticity allows it to be made into a thickness of 1μm or other shapes.Permalloyis usually processed into sheets or strips, and is adopted by relays, small transformers and those working in weak or medium magnetic fields. Now, we can provide Permalloy strips such as 1J79 and 1j85. 1J79 has good combined properties, making it suitable for common mode inductor cores, current transformer cores and high-frequency low-voltage transformers.

On the other hand, 1J85 is suitable for common mode inductors, precision current transformers, and weak signal low frequency/high frequency input and output transformers, etc. Permalloy is a nickel-iron magnetic alloy with approximately 80% nickel and 20% iron content. Invented by physicist Gustav Elmen at Bell Labs in 1914, it is notable for its relatively high magnetic permeability, which makes it useful as a material for magnetic cores in electrical and electronic equipment, and also magnetic shielding to block magnetic fields.

Commercial Permalloy typically has a relative permeability of about 100,000, compared to several thousand for ordinary steel. In addition to high permeability, its other magnetic properties include low coercivity, near-zero magnetostriction, and significant anisotropic magnetoresistance.

Low magnetostriction is important for industrial applications, so it can be used in thin films where variable stresses can cause destructive changes in magnetic properties. The resistivity of Permalloy can vary by 5%, depending on the strength and direction of the applied magnetic field.
